What is your favorite part about your job/creating videos?

My favorite part of creating videos is how it’s given me really excellent practice to move with the camera. When I pull up to a bride’s house, the church or synagogue, or the venue, I hop out of my car and am hit with an immense sense of purpose and an electric “man on a mission” feeling. I’ve been to so many weddings now, over 100 since I was a teenager working for my grandfather’s studio, that I feel so in touch with my style, with the shots I know add incredible flair to a couple’s film when I’m editing later. All of this is balanced with a ticking clock, with a racing schedule that gets me moving and grabbing all the building blocks for a great video later. It’s just cool to get to work on this skill and be able to practice it regularly.

What advice would you give to future couples to help perfectly capture their special day?

My advice for couples when it comes to having a videographer capture their wedding is to roll with all the cameras in the room. This is likely the first time they’ve had someone shooting them specifically for an extended time, the best footage comes when people are shot relaxed and engaging each other naturally. I do my best to be as inconspicuous as I can. I think of shooting like documentary filmmakers in the Sahara waiting patiently, unseen, to grab that natural moment of the lion chasing a gazelle. Once the subject becomes aware of the camera, a lot of the time, the candid moments are lost. So that’s why I show up in camo.

What is your favorite part of any given wedding day you shoot?

My favorite part of the wedding day is the hour or two before the ceremony. Let’s be real, everyone is amped up and pretty nervous. I feel it too! It’s like, oh man everything about to go down, and I’m assessing the room to find my best angles for the ceremony, setting up and checking my sound gear, all the while looking for those special shots of relatives embracing who haven’t seen each other in years, or a little nephew posing in his mini suit to the laughter of those in the room. Most of all there’s this really cool headspace I get into, of feeling the anticipation and nerves, then locking it down and staying cool and collected to get everything perfect.

What are your hobbies outside of shooting video?

Outside of video, I absolutely love carpentry. I built out an old VW bus a few years ago, and now I’m building a 28ft tiny house on wheels. Waking up early, out with the sunshine, sawdust flying, Talking Heads blaring on my little speaker. That’s it right there.
